PROJECT DATA SHEET

  • Customer: Proximus
  • Scope: thorough inspection of the building envelope
  • Approach: inspections from the cable cars supplemented by drone inspection (drone pilot flying and taking photographs always at the direction of the inspector)

A condition assessment provides input for drawing up and adjusting a multi-annual maintenance plan. This is because multiple factors, such as wind, rain and sun, can erode the quality and durability of building elements over the years. To assess any defects such as cracks, moisture leakage, discolouration, etc., it therefore becomes imperative to periodically screen the state of the building.

This periodic evaluation of façades, roofs, mast construction and structural building elements of the underground and technical building layers generally requires the use of cherry pickers, scaffolding construction and façade climbers on safety harnesses with cables, lifelines and helmets to inspect the harder-to-reach places.

Freestone links its knowledge and experience to the latest technologies, meaning the result was even better tailored to our needs. The project enables us to get a good picture of the state of our buildings in a quick and efficient manner. The use of drones also offers some interesting possibilities for future collaboration with Freestone Ann Ballaux – National Building Manager, Connectimmo

Drone inspection

However, Freestone suggested the use of drones to Connectimmo for the inspections this time. Drone inspections are not only quicker, safer and more cost-efficient, they also take very sharp and reliable photos and video imagery, which can be analysed in detail later on.

Using this analysis, decisions can subsequently taken as to which zones are in need of closer investigation by an inspector.

Inspections using infra-red cameras

Drone technology offers some interesting opportunities for future projects. In the winter period, for example, inspections using infra-red cameras can be carried out to detect any temperature variations and thereby moisture in difficult-to-reach places.
